Sycamore Farm in Bloom!

Sycamore Farm Cottages are celebrating winning a second consecutive Silver Award in the Tourist Board's Yorkshire in Bloom Award Ceremony in September.

The Judges' Report
SYCAMORE FARM COTTAGES, FARNLEY TYAS, HUDDERSFIELD - SILVER
Sycamore Farm Cottages are a charming renovation project offering accommodation with interesting views. The cottages have retained their original character and are in keeping with the surroundings. This is a new entry and really a one-woman operation. The semi private garden is filled with a good variety of planting and there are plans to further enhance the area.

SECTION A- FLORAL DISPLAYS
The judges were impressed by:
1. The large number of containers giving a floral welcome.
2. Use of bedding plants as in filling in the newly completed site.
3. Colour, variety and quality of planting.
4. Watering regime shows in plant quality and is very demanding.

Suggestions for future development:
1. Possible introduction of some climbing varieties.
2. Larger troughs would give more impact and reduce the watering requirements.
3. Self-watering (reservoir) hanging baskets or a drip feed watering system would be helpful.

SECTION B- PERMANENT LANDSCAPING

The judges were impressed by:
1. The permanent planting and mix of shrubs in suitable large containers.
2. The garden was well maintained with a good variety of shrubs with well kept lawns.

Suggestions for future development:
1. Increase the permanent planting at front of cottages.
2. Possibly create a water feature.
3. Consider planting aromatic plants in patio area.

SECTION C- ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

The judges were impressed by:
1. Clean and tidy area with good car parking.
2. New seating is well considered.

Suggestions for future development:
2. Utilise press releases.
3. Publicity about Yorkshire In Bloom competition could be displayed in the cottages.
